Carry Bikes on a Car Rack
Piccadilly Cycles offers racks for carrying your bikes with you on a car, including Thule and Hollywood hitch mounted racks and Saris trunk racks.
We understand that you love your bikes so much you want to bring them along with you, whether for a day trip to ride some unexplored territory, or further afield. Even if you've got a pickup truck or SUV, packing in a couple of bikes can be a real wrestling match. We have done - and continue to do - the research on the best ways to carry your bikes on your car, and can help you navigate the process of deciding which rack is best for you.
Here are a few of our top picks of bike racks for cars. Thule, Hollywood, and Saris are the three brands you'll find at our shop, but we can also order racks from Yakima, Kuat, and others. If you'd like to talk to us about the kinds of bikes you intend to carry on your vehicle and the best rack for your needs, we look forward to hearing from you.
One of the reasons we have such confidence that a Thule hitch bike rack won’t let you or your bikes down is because at the Thule Test Center™, they load the bike racks with twice the recommended maximum weight and then simulate them going twice around the world, complete with bumps. Only when a hitch rack survives that is it good enough for you and your bikes.
Use the handy Thule Fit Guide to determine the rack that will fit your car best, or call us and we can help you choose.
Thule T2 Pro XT
Our most popular hitch rack is tough to beat for its simplicity, ease of use, stability, and range of features including single-handle tilt and folding, integrated locks and one-step installation. Comes in silver or black, for either a 1.25" or 2" hitch, with a 60 lb per bike load capacity. Easily carries two bicycles or electric bikes; capacity can be increased to four bikes with the optional add-on (for 2" hitch model only). What we love most about this rack is that the main handle is on the outside of the rack, so there's no reaching through the bikes to tilt or fold. The rack adapts so quickly to various sizes and types of bikes that it is an absolute breeze to use.
Hollywood Sportrider SE2
$349 - $439
Hollywood offers a budget-friendly, super sturdy rack that works great for more occasional use when speed of loading the bikes and ease of operation are less crucial. This rack comes in a 2" hitch model only, and is rated for up to 80 lbs per bike.
Thule EasyFold XT 2
The EasyFold might well be called the Easy Load, with its ramp allowing bikes to be rolled up onto the molded platform, where a clamping arm locks to the bike's frame and two straps secure the wheels for an ultra-stable bike carrying system. It folds up to suitcase dimensions for transport and storage, and the same rack even adapts to both a 1.25" and 2" receiver hitch. Carrying 2 bikes at 65 lbs each, this is an excellent choice for heavier electric bikes or, becasue of its ramp loading, vehicles with high receiver hitches which might be difficult to load. The ultimate rack for all types of bikes.
Kuat NV 2.0
NV 2.0 represents an evolution of the storied NV rack: it’s sleeker, easier to use, more adjustable and allows for more bike carrying options with its 4.8” tire width capacity. Featuring adjustable cradles for fit adjustments, stronger and longer cable locks, a re-designed rack pivot with hands-free foot lever, removable Trail Doc work-stand, and updated ratchet arms for a more secure hold on your bikes. Ideal for fat bikes, enduro and downhill mountain bikes. The NV 2.0 takes everything that made the NV great and makes it better.
Saris Bones 2 & 3 Bike Trunk Rack
$160 - $180
A truly elegant, simple, affordable and highly adaptable rack for carrying 2-3 bikes on nearly any sedan, hatchback, or SUV. The arc-based design fits over most spoilers and separates bikes on different levels. Rubberized feet protect your car and coated straps protect bike. This is our favorite non-hitch style rack for carrying traditional bikes averaging up to 35 lbs each.
If you don't have a hitch rack and are carrying a step-through bike on a trunk-mounted rack, the Thule Crossbar solves the problem of how to hang the bike on your rack. Collars secure to the bike seat and stem, and a telescoping rod fits bikes of all sizes. Push-button clamps allow quick installation and removal.
